Becoming a Pokemon Master: 10 Places Not to Miss in Tokyo

Few cities blend the futuristic with the nostalgic quite like Tokyo. It’s a place where neon-lit arcades sit beside centuries-old temples and where every neighbourhood feels like its own universe. As someone who has loved Pokémon, video games and anime since I was a kid, this trip felt incredibly personal. It was like stepping into the worlds that shaped me, but seeing them through the lens of travel, design and culture that I love today.

Whether you’re here for the food, the fashion, the temples or the pop culture, here are 10 unmissable places that truly capture the essence of Tokyo.

1. Akihabara: Every Gamer’s Dreamland

The beating heart of Japan’s gaming and otaku culture, Akihabara is neon chaos in the best way possible. Retro arcades, multi-floor gaming centres, rare trading cards, anime figurines and endless collectibles create a sensory overload that feels like a pilgrimage for gamers.
For me, this was a childhood dream realized.

TBS Tip: Visit in the late afternoon when the signs begin to glow and the whole area comes alive.

2. Harajuku: Colour, Creativity & Culture

Harajuku is playful, vibrant and endlessly expressive. From Takeshita Street’s kaleidoscope of street food and rainbow boutiques to the calm, tree-lined pathways of Meiji Shrine, this neighbourhood perfectly captures Tokyo’s ability to blend tradition with innovation.

TBS Tip: If you love fashion, block out at least half a day. Harajuku rewards slow wandering through all the stores.

3. Tokyo Tower: Classic, Cinematic Tokyo

Iconic, bright red and instantly recognisable, Tokyo Tower remains one of the best vantage points in the city. Whether you visit during the day or when it glows at night, the views from the main deck are unbeatable. It’s a Tokyo classic for a reason.

TBS Tip: Pair your visit with a dinner in nearby Roppongi, it's one of Tokyo’s liveliest neighbourhoods.

4. The Pokémon Center: A Nostalgic Dream Come True

One of the most special stops for me, was walking into the Pokémon Center which felt like stepping back into my childhood. The Pokémon Center itself is overflowing with exclusive merch, plushies, trading cards, collectibles and larger-than-life character statues. There is also a Pokemon cafe where you can sample Pokémon inspired treats.

TBS Tip: Popular items sell out fast so I would recommend going early.

5. Shibuya: Tokyo at Full Speed

The Shibuya Scramble Crossing is iconic, but there’s more to explore, huge shopping plazas, rooftop viewpoints, themed cafés and endless dining options. The energy here is electric from morning to late night.

6. Ghibli Museum: A World of Whimsy

The Ghibli Museum is for the animation lovers. Every corner is filled with creativity, from the architecture to the whimsical exhibits and hidden surprises. It feels like stepping straight into a Hayao Miyazaki film. No photos allowed, which makes the memories even more special.

TBS Tip: Tickets sell out quickly and must be purchased in advance. Set a reminder for the release date.

7. Senso-ji Temple: Tokyo’s Spiritual Heart

Located in Asakusa, Senso-ji is Tokyo’s oldest and most visited temple. Walk through the Kaminarimon Gate, browse traditional snack stalls along Nakamise Street, and take in the beauty of the main hall. It’s a timeless reminder of Tokyo’s rich history and spiritual roots.

8. Tokyo DisneySea: Arguably the Best Disney Park in the World

DisneySea is often hailed as the most beautifully designed Disney park in the world, and it lives up to the hype. Themed ports like the Mysterious Island and Mediterranean Harbor feel cinematic, while the rides and storytelling are incomparable. Prepare to spend a full day here.

9. Tokyo Skytree: Modern Views Above the Clouds

At 634 meters, Skytree delivers jaw-dropping panoramas. The Tembo Deck makes you feel like you’re floating above the world’s largest metropolis.

TBS Tip: Book sunset tickets. Watching Tokyo shift from day to night is unforgettable.

10. The Imperial Palace: Calm in the Middle of the City

In a city known for constant motion, the Imperial Palace offers a peaceful pause. The East Gardens and outer moat are perfect for morning strolls, showcasing traditional architecture, manicured landscapes and a sense of stillness you won’t find anywhere else in Tokyo.

TBS Tip: The East Gardens are open to the public and free, a great start to a day of exploring.

Where to Stay in Tokyo

I’ve personally stayed at all three of the hotels below, and each offered something unique, memorable and deeply aligned with the way I love to travel. Whether you’re after serenity, skyline views or refined elegance, I can highly recommend any of these properties.

Aman Tokyo

A serene sanctuary floating above the city. Minimalist design, warm Japanese hospitality and one of the best spas in Asia. Perfect for travellers who crave space, calm and modern sophistication.

The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo

Sophisticated, polished and home to sweeping skyline views. The Club Lounge is exceptional, and the Roppongi location is ideal for nightlife, dining and easy access to some of Tokyo’s biggest attractions.

The Peninsula Tokyo

Elegant, iconic and positioned directly across from the Imperial Palace Gardens. The service is flawless, the rooms beautifully crafted, and the overall experience feels timeless.

What to Eat in Tokyo

Tokyo’s food scene is unmatched, from Michelin sushi counters to street snacks that cost less than a coffee.

  • Sushi: Try a omakase experience at a neighbourhood counter rather than big-name spots, often more intimate.

  • Ramen: Ichiran for classic tonkotsu, Afuri for yuzu ramen, or Nagi for sardine broth lovers.

  • Tempura: Tempura Kondo is exceptional but reservations are essential.

  • Street Snacks: Harajuku crepes, melon pan in Asakusa, taiyaki near Senso-ji.

  • Katsu Sando: A must-try. Soft milk bread + crisp pork cutlet = perfection.

TBS Tip: Tokyo is a city where the small, local places often surprise you the most, don’t be afraid to duck into a place with no English menu.

The Takeaway

Tokyo is a city of contrasts, bold and calm, historic and futuristic, nostalgic and innovative. For me, it was a place where my childhood passions met my adult love for travel, design and exploration. These 10 unmissable experiences are just the beginning, but they’ll give you an incredible introduction to one of the world’s most captivating cities.
